Construction is well underway on the 149-year-old Victoria Theatre and Victoria Concert Hall in Singapore.

The extensive internal refurbishment started with the Concert Hall. With the demolition and excavation works now complete, construction of the new Theatre has begun at basement level.

Arup has been working with the Ministry of Information, Communications and the Arts and National Arts Council on the project to ensure that the venue is restored to its former glory and also meet 21st century artistic demands. Work to bring the Theatre and Concert Hall in line with contemporary criteria will focus on the auditoria, backstage spaces, rehearsal areas and audience facilities. Arup’s theatre and acoustic consultants are playing a key role in a major restoration of the venue which covers upgrading technical systems, enhancing acoustics and improving sightlines and audience and performer facilities.

“Designing a 21st century venue, while preserving the façade and historical structures, has needed some very creative design work. The Victoria Concert Hall was once considered to have the best acoustics in the city, so our team of expert theatre and acoustic consultants is working on the project to ensure that this reputation is restored and the venue is once again filled with beautiful music.“

— Rob Harris, Director, Arup

This milestone project is part of the ‘Renaissance City’ plan to transform Singapore into a global city for arts and culture by 2015.
