According to the New York Times, a recent study has detected high levels of lead in chicken eggs from New York City public neighborhood gardens.

The study examined eggs from community gardens in Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Queens. Of the 58 chicken eggs tested, 28 eggs contained lead levels of 10 to 73 parts per billion, with one egg having over 100 parts per billion.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not set a limit for lead levels in eggs. However, in 1993 the FDA established an acceptable daily lead intake level for child 6 years old and younger to be 6 micrograms or 6 parts per billion. Therefore, all of the eggs that tested positive for lead content in this study had levels that exceeded FDA standards.

Researchers plan to continue this study by analyzing soil and feeds in attempt to determine if they are a factor in the eggs’ lead content.

Although lead is a naturally occurring element that can be ingested in many ways, even low amounts of the metal can damage the body’s organs, including the brain, kidneys, and bone marrow.

“Young children are especially susceptible to the health effects from lead because their bodies are still developing, making it easy for them to absorb and retain lead,” states Shannon Kauffman, Metals Laboratory Supervisor at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “EMSL Analytical, the nation’s leading environmental lead laboratory with over 30 years of experience, provides lead analysis for a variety of food and environmental samples.”
