AP Video Transformation Initiative Wins Chairman’s Prize

WEBWIRE

NEW YORK – The multimillion-dollar initiative that upgraded AP’s worldwide video production, newsgathering and distribution operations has been named the winner of the 2012 AP Chairman’s Prize.

During the 18-month project, a cross-disciplinary team rebuilt AP’s video infrastructure, built new delivery portals, created new work flows and trained staff to use new equipment and tell stories in new ways that respond to customer and market needs.

“This sweeping overhaul of AP’s video business assures that we can provide our customers all their video needs as demand for video continues to grow,” said AP President and CEO Gary Pruitt. “It was a remarkable undertaking. AP video is now all high definition, we use the latest HD technology and we’ve trained video journalists and print and photo journalists to use video as well.”

Under the initiative, AP built a new portal at www.APArchive.com for its extensive video archives collection, which contains more than 1.3 million global news and entertainment stories dating to the beginning of the 20th century. AP also built a pioneering digital self-service platform, called AP Video Hub, which allows customers to download and edit video on desktop without the costly infrastructure usually required.

The AP Video Hub, introduced first in Europe, is now rolling out in the United States. The Wall Street Journal is among the first customers to sign up for it.

“The video initiative came in on schedule and on budget, and amid this huge effort AP video operations continued normally, without impact to our customers,” said AP Senior Vice President Daisy Veerasingham, who oversaw the project. “It was an extraordinary performance by our staff.”

The AP Chairman’s Prize was created by the late Burl Osborne, former chairman of AP, to honor AP staffers’ creative thinking, performance breakthroughs and entrepreneurial changes that affect AP and the industry it serves.
