Ashland Introduces Optimized Portfolio of Aquarius™ Tablet Film Coating Systems

WEBWIRE

SCHAFFHAUSEN, Switzerland - With an optimized portfolio of Aquarius tablet film coating systems, Ashland Specialty Ingredients, a commercial unit of Ashland Inc. (NYSE: ASH) will showcase how superior performance and tablet aesthetics can be achieved through its impressive range of formulations at this year’s Convention on Pharmaceutical Ingredients (CPhI) Worldwide in Madrid, Spain, Oct. 9-11.

Ashland recently celebrated the one-year anniversary of the acquisition of International Specialty Products Inc. (ISP). The combination of Ashland and ISP has resulted in the creation of one of the most comprehensive functional coatings offerings in the global market. As part of the acquisition integration activities, the Aquarius manufacturing process was consolidated into Ashland’s cGMP (Current Good Manufacturing Practice) plant located in Wilmington, Del.

“Through the integration of Ashland and ISP, the sum of the whole is now greater than the sum of the parts. If you consider the complete mix - the consolidated force of our technology, production, R&D capabilities, sales force and global coverage - it brings massive synergies to our customers,” said John Fitzpatrick, new product leader, Pharmaceutical Specialties, Ashland Specialty Ingredients. “Ours is a powerful coatings portfolio of virtually unequalled breadth, a vast expertise base with laboratories in the U.S., Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Turkey, India and China, and a full service model that will address the customers’ formulation problems.”

To meet the ever-changing customer needs for pharmaceutical performance, Ashland is introducing three new lines of Aquarius products:

-Aquarius Prime film coating systems consist of pre-blended, ready-to-use powders based on hydroxypropylmethylcellulose (HPMC) that are easily dispersed in water and applied to immediate-release dosage forms. Aquarius Prime film coating systems can be matched to customers’ existing HPMC film coating systems, and are available in clear and white formulations off the shelf.
-Aquarius Preferred film coating systems are scientifically formulated to impart state-of-the-art functionalities within immediate-release coatings. With access to an unrivaled range of cellulosic and other polymeric excipients, Ashland formulators have enabled Aquarius film coating systems to be tailored to meet customers’ exacting requirements while also providing superior performance in moisture and odor protection. Aquarius Preferred film coating systems are available in high-solids coating formulations, which, in addition to improving film adhesion to all substrates, speed up the coating application process and, in return, help reduce manufacturing costs.
-The Aquarius Control film coating systems consists of two types of coatings. Aquarius Control ENA film coating systems are delayed-release (enteric) coatings that are designed to protect active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) that degrade in gastric fluid, or to prevent the release of APIs that may irritate the stomach. These film coating systems have predictable and controllable release retardation. The release profiles of tablets enteric coated with Aquarius Control ENA film coating systems are remarkably stable over periods of up to 12 months, even under accelerated stability testing. Aquarius Control SRX film coating systems are sustained-release coatings for APIs where drug release over an extended period of time is required. A key benefit of Aquarius Control SRX film coating systems is that they do not require curing after coating.

“The strength that we bring to the market with our optimized Aquarius portfolio is performance versatility.” said Stuart Porter, technical lead, North American Technical Services and Global Film Coating Technology, Ashland Specialty Ingredients. “Designing effective film coating performance attributes are at the core of Ashland’s Aquarius lines. We are focusing on what is important to our customers - getting the coatings to perform exactly in the manner that the customers require. We get the film performance right, while continuing to deliver the right color.”
