One of the goals of the ABIH is to promote the advancement of the industrial hygiene profession by offering the Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) certification and to create awareness of the important role these professionals play in today’s society.  In support of this goal, the ABIH has begun a new awareness campaign in the public, private and government sectors.

A CIH is an individual who has met the requirements for education and experience, and through examination, has demonstrated knowledge and skills in the following areas:

  • Air Sampling & Instrumentation
  • Analytical Chemistry
  • Basic Science
  • Biohazards
  • Biostatistics & Epidemiology
  • Community Exposure
  • Engineering Controls/Ventilation
  • Ergonomics
  • Health Risk Analysis & Hazard Communication
  • IH Program Management
  • Noise
  • Non-Engineering Controls
  • Radiation – Ionizing and Non-ionizing
  • Thermal Stressors
  • Toxicology
  • Work Environments & Industrial Processes

To further the ABIH’s efforts to increase public awareness the organization has begun working with the public relations professionals at Cochrane & Associates, LLC.  The company has a long history of working with professionals from the industrial hygiene, health & safety, indoor air quality (IAQ), building sciences, and infectious disease control industries.  Cochrane & Associates will also be employing their IAQ Video Network to develop online videos to disseminate important industrial hygiene and ABIH related information.

“The ABIH role is critical to ensure that only qualified and knowledgeable individuals attain the CIH credential, our highest level of recognition for industrial hygiene professionals,” reported Tracy Parsons, CIH, Administrative Program Manager at ABIH.  “This new campaign will increase awareness of the ABIH’s role and of the benefits of using CIHs.”
