In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns over exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.  This list includes methyleugenol, which was added to the Prop 65 list in 2001.

Methyleugenol is a naturally occurring substance and is present in many essential oils.  It can also be produced synthetically for use in various manufacturing processes. Methyleugenol has been used in its natural and synthetic forms as a flavoring agent in foods, as an agent in sunscreens, an attractant in insecticides, and as a fragrance in perfumes and soaps.

LA Testing offers testing services to identify methyleugenol to help prevent exposure to people from this potentially harmful chemical in the environment, at work or in consumer products.  “Not only can the use of methyleugenol in products expose people to this chemical, but it has also been found in wastewater samples from industrial effluent,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc., a network of environmental testing laboratories.  “Occupational exposure to methyleugenol can also occur within industries that utilize this chemical.  Dermal contact, inhalation, and ingestion are all possible exposure routes.  Occupational exposure testing can determine if this chemical poses a threat to workers,” he continued.
