All Pradaxa lawsuits currently filed in federal district courts as well as future Pradaxa lawsuits have been consolidated into one multidistrict litigation, (MDL) in the Southern District of Illinois.

The Pradaxa MDL will be heard by US District Court Judge David Herndon. This is great news for all victims of the anticoagulant which can cause serious and even fatal bleeding issues.

Boehringer Ingelheim, the manufacturer of Pradaxa had opposed the centralization of the Pradaxa litigation arguing that Judge Herndon was also overseeing another MDL over Yaz and Yasmin

What is Pradaxa?

Pradaxa was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on October 19, 2010 for the prevention of stroke and blood clots in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF).

AF, which affects over 2 million Americans, is one of the most common forms of abnormal heart rhythm. Pradaxa was developed as an alternative to another anticoagulant, warfarin (Coumadin) which has been used for the last 50 years but required periodic monitoring.

Life threatening and sometimes fatal bleeding is among the most common adverse reaction reported with both anti-clotting drugs, but at least with warfarin, vitamin K works to stop the bleeding where with Pradaxa, there is no reversal agent.

The Pradaxa lawsuits in the MDL are alleging that Pradaxa causes an excessive risk of bleeding and that Boehringer Ingelheim failed to warn both medical professionals and the public about the lack of a reversal agent to stop a potentially fatal Pradaxa bleeding risk.

Why Should You File a Pradaxa MDL

When several individuals have the same complaint against the same defendant, in this case, the drug manufacturer, a class action lawsuit could be filed. This means that all the cases are brought before one judge, one case, one trial and one settlement that is equally shared.

In a MDL, there is also one Judge, however, each individual is allowed to retain their own attorney which will represent them in their own lawsuit with an individual award.

The award will be based on each case and can be greater than that received in a class action settlement.

In an MDL, documents and evidence can be shared and used by any of the Plaintiffs which will help to speed up the process.
