SOM based on DM3730 video processor and WiLink™ connectivity solution from Texas Instruments chosen by editors for its size, speed and remote connectivity

MINNEAPOLIS – Aug. 15, 2012 — Editors at Embedded Computing Design magazine have named Logic PD’s DM3730 Torpedo + Wireless System on Module (SOM) a Top Embedded Innovation. Among 66 product entries received for the first presentation of the Top Embedded Innovation awards, Logic PD’s SOM was chosen by editors as the winner in the Strategies category. One winner was chosen for each editorial department: Silicon, Software and Strategies, along with an overall winner. The winners are featured in the August 2012 issue.

“In the Strategies section, we showcase the latest techniques and products that designers use to create tomorrow’s embedded technology,” said Warren Webb, OpenSystems Media, Embedded Computing Design Editorial Director. “The Logic PD DM3730 Torpedo + Wireless SOM was selected as the Top Innovative Product in this category specifically because it offers designers a tiny, off-the-shelf wireless interface that is FCC certified, enables remote connectivity and eliminates the local user interface. It allows developers to dramatically condense hardware space requirements and increase system performance.”

Based on the DaVinci DM3730 video processor and WiLinkTM 7.0 (WL1283) combo connectivity solution from Texas Instruments Incorporated (TI), Logic PD’s Torpedo SOM encapsulates the most complex design components on a dime-sized board and offers high performance and the lowest power consumption available today. The Torpedo SOM can also be used for development on the Sitara™ AM37x ARM® Cortex™ processors from TI.

“Our TI team is proud to provide the foundational technologies behind Logic PD’s DM3730 Torpedo + Wireless SOM, which accelerates the development of new, wirelessly enabled products,” said Mike Schoonover, industrial business development manager, OMAP™ platform business unit, TI. “The combination of TI’s DM3730 video processor and WiLink connectivity solution arms developers with top-notch performance, efficient power and robust wireless connectivity – all on a board that is less than one square inch in size.”

The Torpedo + Wireless SOM provides PC-like speeds up to 1 GHz, long battery life and a WL1283 wireless chipset that includes 802.11a/b/g/n, Bluetooth® technology, and the Torpedo + Wireless SOM roadmap to support GPS. Additionally, the DM3730 Torpedo + Wireless SOM is FCC certified. This saves customers significant time and money by reducing design risk and shortening the final electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) testing phase. The ultra-compact Torpedo + Wireless SOM is an ideal off-the-shelf solution for use in wireless machine-to-machine (M2M) applications such as telehealth devices and remote industrial monitoring systems.

“We knew the DM3730 wireless SOM would have a significant, positive impact on the embedded community and we are honored that the industry is so quickly recognizing the plethora of benefits this integrated modular approach delivers,” said Dr. Scott Nelson, executive vice president and CTO, Logic PD. “We are noticing particular interest from M2M application developers as remote systems gain increasing interest for their potential to enhance productivity and extend greater efficiencies to businesses and consumers alike.”

Logic PD provides Android and Linux™ board support packages (BSPs) for use with the DM3730 Torpedo + Wireless SOM.  These BSPs are designed, developed and tested using an ISO 13485 certified process to ensure quality and reduce risk. By maintaining connector compatibility with Logic PD’s existing Torpedo SOM product lines, the DM3730 Torpedo + Wireless SOM extends the longevity of existing products through performance improvements while sustaining scalability to future technologies.
