The well-known term “rare earth metals” is considered misleading because, contrary to popular belief, most of these metals are abundant within the crust of the Earth. They are often referred to as “rare” because they are isolated among various geographic locations and therefore it would not be economical to exploit them due to their low concentrations.

According to The International Union of Pure Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), rare earth metals are defined as a set of seventeen chemical elements found on the periodic table. More specifically, they include fifteen lanthanides, plus scandium and yttrium.

Over the last several decades, there has been a sudden increase in demand for these rare earth metals, since many of them are vital for the development of modern products, technologies, and defense department uses.

Major producers of these metals include China, Brazil, India, Thailand, and Malaysia. The United States, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Malawi are considered minor producers.

The United States was the global leader in the production of rare earth metals prior to the 1980s.  However, currently China is the dominant global producer; numerous reports argue that China is accountable for more than 95% of the world’s production on a rare earth oxide basis.

Many countries have large deposits of minerals that have yet to be produced due to technological constraints and the potential for environmental damage. Countries with large deposits include Russia, Canada, and Australia.

“EMSL Analytical offers a comprehensive range of testing for all 17 rare earth metals,” states Shannon Kauffman, Metals Laboratory Manager. “Our free poster detailing the uses and locations where rare earth metals are mined is a great informational resources.
