Last month, The Christian Science Monitor published an article entitled, “Bed bugs: How not to bring them home from summer vacation hot spots.”  The article discussed the increase in public awareness of bed bugs and how many people are concerned about exposure to these pests, or bringing them back home, during their summer vacations.

Cimex lectularius, also known as bed bugs, are small, flat, parasitic insects that feed solely on the blood of people and animals usually while they sleep. Bed bugs are reddish-brown in color, wingless, and can live several months without a blood meal.

Bed bugs are found across the globe from North and South America, to Africa, Asia and Europe. Although the presence of bed bugs has traditionally been seen as a problem in developing countries, it has recently been spreading rapidly in parts of the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, and other parts of Europe.
Bed bugs have been found in everything from five-star hotels and resorts to roadside motels.  Their presence is not determined by the cleanliness of the living conditions where they are found.

“Bed bug infestations usually occur around or near the areas where people sleep,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “These areas may include apartments, shelters, rooming houses, hotels, cruise ships, buses, trains, and dorm rooms. All places people may stay at during a summer trip and possible sources where these bugs could hitch a ride back to people’s homes.  Because bed bugs are small and often hard to find during daylight hours, EMSL offers testing for bed bugs utilizing advanced DNA analysis.  This means that a sample can be collected from bedding or another area and within a short period of time extremely accurate results about whether they are present or not will be in the hands of our customers,” he continued.

EMSL recently sponsored an online educational video about bed bugs that can be seen at:
