This week on Uncommon Wealth’s radio show, host Jacob Cooper will discuss the financial planning industry’s trend toward greater inclusion of alternative investments in client portfolios.  Jackson National recently released a survey that found 9 out of 10 advisors are using or considering using alternative investments with their investment management.  Half of those plan on increasing their usage by at least 15%.

Five years ago, Total Wealth Management, lead by CEO Jacob Cooper, CFP®, started using alternative investments heavily in its asset management.  With less than a little sarcasm, Jacob says, “It’s nice to see the industry finally catching up with us.”

Cliford Jack, an Executive VP at Jackson National is quoted as saying, “Over the last decade, markets have experienced record volatility. We’re entering a new era of diversification and alternative asset classes are becoming a significant part of that development.”

“For us,” Jacob comments, “The ‘new era’ began in 2007, before the crash of 08.  While so many are reacting the financial crisis we’ve all gone through (and still are), we were largely in front of it.”

Cooper urges people to limit traditional based investment strategies, such as buying and holding mutual funds/stocks, to 15% or less of their overall portfolio.

“That sounded like crazy talk 4-5 years ago when we started altering our practice.  Now it’s becoming more the norm.”

In addition, Cooper will discuss tomorrow morning on the show a Portfolio Stress Test that his firm offers as well as alternative based investment solutions that have proven themselves through the most difficult investment client we’ve seen since the great depression.

Uncommon Wealth airs every Saturday morning at 10 PST on News Radio FM 95.7 and AM 600 KOGO in the greater San Diego area.  Listen live anywhere in the world on KOGO.com or the iHeartRadio app.
