Cinnaminson, NJ, July 11th, 2012

Recently, the Environmental Working Group released their annual “Dirty Dozen” report of produce that contains high amounts of pesticide residues.  The information was based on pesticide residue data from the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on samples prepared as they would be eaten after being washed or peeled.

This year’s report listed the following produce in the Dirty Dozen list, it included: apples, celery, sweet bell peppers, peaches, strawberries, imported nectarines, grapes, spinach, lettuce, cucumbers, domestic blueberries and potatoes.  Also listed were the “Clean 15” fruits and vegetables that had the least amount of pesticide residue.  The list included: onions, sweet corn, pineapples, avocado, cabbage, sweet peas, asparagus, mangoes, eggplant, kiwi, domestic cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, grapefruit, watermelon and mushrooms.  Information collected by the USDA also found baby food with organophosphate pesticide residues.

One company that has been helping to inform consumers about various pesticides and the nutritional content of their food is EMSL Analytical, Inc.  EMSL is one of the country’s leading food testing and nutritional labeling laboratories.

“The information provider by the Environmental Working Group’s Dirty Dozen list should remind consumers that the foods they bring home from the grocery store may still have pesticide residues on them and to take the appropriate precautions,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc.  “The more consumers know about the nutritional content of foods and any pesticides residues that may be present will allow people to make healthier choices for their families.  At EMSL Analytical we have been offering all types of food testing services to the public, industry, retailers and government regulating bodies.”
