China competition is part of Lucent´s global effort to promote development of next generation applications and can serve as model for similar contests in other regions

JUNE 27, 2006, MURRAY HILL, NJ - Lucent Technologies (NYSE: LU) announced today that a prototype application that enables mobile bidding for goods and services has been selected as the winning entry during the Lucent Cup Software Application Innovation Contest in China.

The contest, initiated and sponsored by Lucent Bell Labs Research China in collaboration with Southeast University in Nanjing, China, featured 173 individuals and teams from 22 universities and colleges in China that developed and submitted applications encompassing mobile public services, enterprise services, personal security services, and mobile entertainment applications. Representatives from major operators served as judges.

The winning entry, from a Southeast University student, provided a mobile bidding application that enables a business to send a person an invitation to bid based on the individual´s chosen profile - specific goods and services of interest, time (when the person would be interested in bidding) and desired product location (a shopping mall for example). Alerts would be sent to the subscriber´s mobile device. The subscriber could bid via text message.

Rounding out the top three entries were a mobile application offering directions, such as needed between two buddies who are “on the go”, and a suite of applications for mobile devices, including a one-stop emergency number that notifies a person´s family and sends the individual´s medical records to the hospital. Students from Nanjing University of Science and Technology and Nanjing University, respectively, submitted these entries. The top three participants were awarded prize money and internships with Lucent Bell Labs Research China where their applications will be developed further to be added to the Lucent customer demonstration center. The showcase will be presented to one of the Big Four China operators this month. It will be shown globally later.

“Lucent and Bell Labs have a history of working with universities and government in local regions where we operate to boost research and technology development. This contest is the first of many planned collaborations between Lucent and Jiangsu Province government under the memorandum of understanding (MOU) for comprehensive software cooperation that we signed in May,” said Dr. Sudhir Ahuja, vice president of multimedia research at Bell Labs and head of Bell Labs´ China research center. “The MOU will be implemented in stages and covers Lucent´s efforts to promote the internationalization of Jiangsu software industry and to cooperate with local governments, research bodies, operators and software development companies and become an active participant and partner of Jiangsu´s software development strategy.”

The Lucent competition, an extension of the Lucent Market Advantage Program (MAP) for Application Partners, is part of the company´s global effort to help promote the development of next generation applications that will meet the market demand for mobile and converged blended services.

“The application innovation contest is the newest element in our program to support the development of converged applications, and it´s our intent to hold similar application-related competitions for college students in other regions of the world,” said Sandip Mukerjee, vice president, Lucent Technologies Applications Solutions Business Unit. “We would like to collaborate with leading colleges and universities as we continue to provide leadership in the IMS service delivery architecture and emerging applications, fostering the next generation of developers with specific expertise for the new networks.”

For the China competition, Lucent, including its Bell Labs unit, provided funding and the Lucent Intelligent Service Gateway (ISG) platform for college students to develop applications.

The Lucent ISG, part of Lucent´s IP Multimedia System architecture, offers an ideal application platform for operators to introduce blended lifestyle services and to facilitate convergence between IT and telecom applications.

Lucent actively supports the application developer community through its MAP for Application Partners program, a unique global developer ecosystem that fosters collaboration to create next-generation applications and content delivery services, helping to drive the resulting new services to market. http://www.lucent.com/map/applications/index.cgi.
