A new study recently published in the medical journal of the American Academy of Neurology has found that individuals who eat a diet rich in omega-3 fatty acids may have a significantly lower risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease.

The study followed the dietary habits of 1,219 individuals, all over the age of 65, for over a year. Those who consumed higher levels of omega-3 had lower levels of a specific protein, beta-amyloid, which is associated with memory problems and the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Amyloid levels were found to decrease 20-30% for each gram of omega-3 fatty acid consumed.

The study also evaluated the effect of beta-carotene, vitamin D, vitamin B-12, vitamin E, omega-6, saturated fatty acids, and non-unsaturated fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids were the only nutrient that showed an association with lower amyloid levels.

“EMSL Analytical’s food chemistry laboratory conducts advanced fat and fatty acid testing, including fatty acids profiles, omega-3, omega-6, and omega-9, milk fat, total (crude) fat (by acid hydrolysis), and fat (soxhlet),” states Shannon Kauffman, EMSL’s Food Chemistry Lab Manager. “We offer a wide range of food chemistry analytical services, many of which can be performed at expedited rates.”
