San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine Connects Community with Physicians To Celebrate National Doctor’s Day

Facebook Live-Chat, article on diabetes management shares pertinent information on hospice and palliative care

SAN DIEGO, CA – To celebrate Doctor’s Day on March 30, 2012, San Diego Hospice and The Institute for Palliative Medicine physicians are engaging with the community-at-large through two online venues.

On Friday, March 30, 2012 from 11 to 11:30 a.m., San Diego Hospice Chief of Psychosocial Services, Scott Irwin, MD, PhD, will be participating in a Facebook Live-Chat to answer questions from San Diego Hospice’s Facebook friends on palliative, hospice and end-of-life care.  To join in this Facebook Event, please visit San Diego Hospice’s Facebook page and leave a comment before or during that time period. Dr. Irwin will answer as many of questions he can, with a follow-up blog entry in The Caregiver’s Corner, summarizing the answers and addressing remaining questions.

Another way San Diego Hospice physicians are connecting with the community is through an informational article posted on Medscape, a WebMD affiliate.  In the article, Clinical Medical Director, Dr. Holly Yang, features practical guidance for diabetes management for patients with life-limiting illnesses. Specifically, the article addresses a man with lung cancer who wonders whether he needs to control his blood sugar or continue with his medications.

“As a palliative medicine physician, we are often approached about how to manage diabetes for patients with advanced illnesses,” said Dr. Yang. “In this case study, I focus on how to approach diabetes by taking the overall picture of a patient’s advanced illness, including their changing needs and medical goals, into consideration.”

To view the full case, visit Medscape and create a free account. While there, please visit The Institute for Palliative Medicine at San Diego Hospice’s Medscape page for additional expert commentary and practical guidance on a range of topics related to palliative and end-of-life care.
