I-COM Backs Manchester City Council Digital City Proposals

WEBWIRE

Plans to make Manchester a ’digital city’ have been supported by online marketing firm I-COM, which believes the proposals can help spark significant economic growth in the north west.

Manchester City Council announced yesterday (March 8th) that it has put together a ten-point plan to make sure the city is one of the leading digital cities in the world by 2020.

To be considered a digital city, the council has to embrace new technologies, encourage local residents and businesses to make use of the web when contacting the council and increase the amount of data that is made available online.

Some of the key objectives outlined in the strategy include ensuring 100 per cent coverage of Wi-Fi and super-fast broadband in all public spaces, providing digital education to residents and encouraging investment in the creative and digital sector.

Manchester is already widely regarded as a place that has embraced digital technology. For example, it was recently revealed the city has the third largest number of Twitter users in Europe, behind Paris and London, and the local authority itself estimated that “5 per cent of all employment [is] categorised as creative and digital”.

Commenting on the news, Tim Roberts, managing director at I-COM - based on Lloyds Street in Manchester - said: "It’s fantastic to hear that the council is putting so much emphasis on digital. These proposals should really help drive economic growth in an industry that is already performing well.

"We recently announced that I-COM has had its most successful financial year to date, despite continued tough economic conditions, and are actively looking to make acquisitions. While this is largely down to the fantastic services we have on offer, it is clear that, on the whole, the digital industry is bucking the trend.

“At I-COM, we have seen firsthand that embracing the internet can provide companies of all sizes with unprecedented growth, and we hope that more and more people and firms are made aware of the benefits of digital technology so that the north west economy can continue to go from strength to strength.”
