Earlier this month, new figures have shown an improvement in the UK manufacturing industry for the beginning of this year with financial experts predicting that positive prospects will continue, and even help prevent the likelihood of the country falling into another recession in 2012.

The Charted Institute of Purchasing and Supply and financial services company Markit, questioned purchasing executives in over six hundred industrial companies regarding their future prospects of 2012.

The research showed proved the beginning of 2012 was off to a positive start with an increase in the Purchasing Managers Index (PMI) of 49.7 at the end of 2011 to 52.1 in January.

David Nesbitt, Director at Core Talent recruitment agency responded to the new figures suggesting, “The research shows a change in fortune for British manufacturing as the sector appears to have kick-started back into life. Hopefully this will lead to new investment over the coming year, as well as potentially leading to an increase in job opportunities”.

The current output of manufacturing and supply is expanding at its fastest rate since last March and the demand for new orders is rising for the first time in over seven months according to the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

The country has also seen its trade gap narrow as we enter the new year, boosting hopes that another recession could still be averted. Contrasting with the manufacturing slump that dragged down the overall growth of the sector of the last quarter of 2011, the closely watched purchasing managers’ index (PMI) survey for January was far more positive than expected, suggesting activity in Britain’s manufacturing and supply chain industries had recovered.

Whether or not it is too early to determine whether this recent rebound is sustainable for the year is a different matter. Many experts believe the sustainable growth of manufacturing is highly dependent on sustainable supply chains and success will only be achieved by understanding and managing the risks in a professional way to avoid being caught out again.
