Claritics Attracts Leading Social, Gaming and Technology Industry Veterans to Board of Advisors

Executives from Gazillion, Facebook, Oracle and Verity to help steer the company’s strategic direction

The inaugural members include Mick Giles, formerly of Electronic Arts, Walt Disney Company’s UTV True Games, Turbine and others; Dhurba Borthakur, Software Engineer at Facebook; Michael Pliner, the founder and former CEO of Verity; and Edwin Meijer, Architect at Oracle.

Mick Giles, Independent Advisor to Gaming Companies
Steven “Mick” Giles is an entertainment industry executive who currently serves as an advisor at Gazillion Entertainment, Scent Sciences, Smilu and ZeroG Games, as well as Claritics. Previously, Giles was the Chief Technology Officer at UTV True Games, a Walt Disney Company Pte. Ltd Subsidiary, where he was responsible for the transformation of monetary, intellectual and political capital into technology. Prior to UTV True Games, Giles served as Sr. Director of Online Operations for North America & Asia and Sr. Director of Technology for Worldwide Studios at Electronic Arts, where he led technology initiatives for as many as six AAA franchises for the company over three years. Prior to that, Giles served as Executive Director of Technology at Turbine, leading multiple core development, operations, IT and business development efforts for MMO games such as Asheron’s Call, Dungeons & Dragons Online, and Lord of the Rings Online. From 2003-2006, Giles served as Director of Platform Technology at Sony Online Entertainment, where he led development and technology efforts on titles such as EverQuest, EverQuest 2, Star Wars Galaxies, The Matrix Online, Planetside and many others.
 
Dhurba Borthakur, Software Engineer, Facebook
Dhruba Borthakur is currently a software engineer at Facebook and has been one of the lead contributors for the Hadoop Distributed File System. He has been associated with Hadoop almost since its inception while working for Yahoo, where he held the title Principle Technical Yahoo. Earlier, he was a Senior Lead Engineer at Veritas Software (since acquired by Symantec) and was responsible for the design and development of software for the Veritas San File System. Earlier, he was a Senior Engineer at IBM-Transarc Labs, where he was responsible for the development of Andrew File System (AFS), a part of IBM’s e-commerce initiative, WebSphere. Borthakur has an M.S. in Computer Science from the University of Wisconsin, Madison and a B.S. in Computer Science from the Birla Institute of Technology and Science (BITS), Pilani, India. He has seven issued patents and 14 patents pending.
 
Michael Pliner, Founder and former CEO, Verity
Michael Pliner, Ph.D., has 39 years of experience as an entrepreneur, operating executive and angel investor and has started, financed and built three successful high technology businesses. Dr. Pliner was the founder and CEO of Verity, a leader in the enterprise search market. He took the company from inception to over $20M in revenue. Prior to Verity, Pliner was the founder and CEO of Sytek, a leader in LAN systems. Pliner successfully grew the company to $96M in revenues and eventually sold the company to Hughes in 1988. He has been active as an angel investor for the past five years and was an early investor in Red Seal, Aster Data, Quixey, Tradescape and LS Biopath. Pliner’s venture relationships include Venrock, USVP, leapfrog, and Walden International. He received a Ph.D. in Computer Science from Case Western Reserve University and an M.S. and B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Case Institute of Technology.
 
Edwin Meijer, Architect, Oracle
Edwin Meijer is currently an architect at Oracle, working on cloud management technology. Previously he was the Vice President of Engineering at Quantivo, a provider of big-data analytics solutions, as well as the Vice President of Engineering at Wait-On-Me, a SaaS provider for mobile restaurant ordering. Meijer has also served as the Vice President of Engineering at OuterBay Technologies, a provider of big data archiving solutions that was acquired by Hewlett Packard. Meijer began his career as a software engineer at AT&T, where he developed telecommunications products, before later joining Oracle the first time around and helping develop and manage various products for the company. He studied Computer Science at Hogeschool Drenthe in the Netherlands.
