Lunchboxes Recalled After Toxic Chemical Leak

EMSL offers rigorous consumer product testing for diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol

Insulated lunchboxes made by California Innovations, Inc. of Toronto, Canada have been recalled due to the risk of ingestion of toxic chemicals in the freezer gel packs. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the company recommended that consumers stop using the product immediately.

The freezer gel packs inside of the lunchboxes contain diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol, which could leak. These chemicals are extremely toxic and could pose a poisoning hazard if ingested by children or adults.

The firm has received two separate reports of dogs chewing the lunchboxes and ingesting the gel inside the freezer packs. One dog died from the incident, while the other was treated and recovered.

“EMSL Analytical’s state-of-the-art consumer products laboratory tests for diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol in cases such as these,” states Shannon Kauffman, EMSL’s Consumer Products Laboratory Manager. “Our dedicated account representatives and customer service team are quick to respond to clients’ questions or concerns as they guide them through the testing process.”
