Silverfin Lacrosse - Military Background Builds a Great Lacrosse Program

WEBWIRE

What do a Hollywood lacrosse club and a C-130 prop plane have in common? The Silverfin name, a propensity for titanium, and a well-greased system of operation.

The Silverfin Lacrosse Story:

After returning from duty abroad as a Navy Pilot, Patrick Smith was coaching lacrosse locally in the northern Los Angeles area. He noticed that there were not many youth lacrosse camps in the area supporting the West Coast’s exciting movement to the sport of lacrosse. In just three years Silverfin has expanded to a college recruiting camp, several instructional events, and six club teams. Along with training, Patrick and former Princeton standout Chris Massey have also started a Silverfin equipment line which they are looking to expand this year.

How did you first hear about TeamSnap?

– “A former manager had set up one of our teams on TeamSnap but not everyone was using it to receive information. When I began coaching, I saw that it was a great tool so I made sure that we got everyone signed up on the TeamSnap lacrosse team website. Using the team communication tools made communicating with the guys much easier. Now when a field drops at the last minute or the opposing team can’t get enough guys together, I can send out a quick text message to let everyone know.” –

Tell us about Silverfin’s strong military connection:

– “The area has a large Air Force and Naval Academy presence so a number of us were already playing together on the Hollywood club team. I also coach with Brad Conners, a former Navy lacrosse player and retired navy Captain. As we formed Silverfin, we have taken a military approach that emphasizes the importance of leadership, a strict time line, and effective communication. We have made it a point to bring together the best staff possible and we always try to do things the right way the first time and not cut corners. Several of our staff have prior military experience and we all share similar values in our approach to training. TeamSnap has helped us to manage our organizational structure with top down information flow and making sure that everyone is informed with the most up to date information.” –

What is your favorite TeamSnap feature?

– “Outside of the text and email functions, we love being able to import the team schedule directly into our phones.” –

What are your plans for Silverfin’s equipment line?

– “We currently have titanium attack and defense handles. We feel titanium is the most effective metal to use for lacrosse handles. It’s strength to weight is unrivaled and the gunmetal finish of our titanium shafts is crisp and clean. Our next round will include some alternate metals and we’re going to be coming out with a new line of gloves in the future.” –

Bet you didn’t know…

The Silverfin name signifies the propeller on a C-130 aircraft called a prop blade or “silver fin.”
