Many industries have extremely tight parameters for any contamination of parts that are used in their manufacturing process.  Testing for contamination and quality control is an integral part of these companies’ final products.

At EMSL Analytical, the Materials Testing Laboratory has extensive experience in providing highly detailed analytical services to assist manufacturers in reaching their contamination prevention goals as well as investigating suspected contamination issues.

To achieve this, scientists with extensive experience utilize some of the most advanced instrumentation available.  For example, the chemical analysis capability of infrared spectroscopy (IR) when coupled with microscopy is a significant improvement. This technique increases the scientist’s ability to interpret the information acquired by either of the two techniques alone. EMSL Analytical has extensive experience in compositing the spectroscopic analysis by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) with microscopic examination.

EMSL’s IlluminatIR® interfaced with a light microscope and an attenuated total reflection (ATR) objective allows regions as small as 15 µm to be simultaneously observed and analyzed. The identification of functional groups present in the molecular structure can lead to identification of difficult materials. Micro-FTIR analysis is valuable in such varied applications as the determination of contaminants, quality assurance, product comparison, screening for biological agents in powder mixtures and identification of unknown substances.

“The relatively new concept of IR microspectroscopy regularly demonstrates its effectiveness in many applications for our customers,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc. “Other techniques such as High Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) with elemental X-ray mapping and Auger’ Electron Spectroscopy (AES) are frequently used to provide additional chemical and morphological information of unknown substances.”
