In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.  This list includes Lactofen, a Restricted Use Pesticide in EPA toxicity class 1.  It is available in solid form and as an emulsified concentrate.

Lactofen is a complex ester of acifluorfen and is used as a selective herbicide.  It is utilized in post-emergence applications as a foliar spray to control broadleaved weeds in fields containing soybeans, potatoes, peanuts and cereal crops.

Workers in the agricultural industry may come into contact with Lactofen during and after its use.  People living near agricultural areas may also come in contact with the herbicide during its use if it is not applied properly.  This contact may come in the form of direct contact, inhalation or by consuming food products or water that has the chemical present.

“California placed Lactofen on their Proposition 65 list of chemicals back in 1989 due to cancer concerns related to the herbicide,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading environmental and industrial hygiene testing laboratory.  “Agricultural workers who are involved in growing products that utilize this herbicide have the greatest risk of potential exposures.  Testing the air, soil and water can help minimize worker exposure and help identify situations where environmental contamination may also be present.  Food testing can also determine if residues of the chemical are present in any food products,” he continued.
