FDA Required to Determine Safety of BPA

EMSL Analytical, Inc. offers a variety of consumer products testing, including bisphenol-A analysis

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) must decide whether the chemical bisphenol-A (BPA) is safe by March 31, 2012, reports the Washington Post. The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) petitioned the FDA in 2008 for a ban of BPA, pointing to numerous research studies that indicate the damaging health effects caused by the chemical. The NRDC then sued the agency when it did not respond with the timeframe required by law. The settlement resulting from that court case demands that the FDA take a stand on BPA use one way or another.
BPA has been widely used in plastics and metal linings of food containers for more than 40 years, according to the Washington Post. The government is currently spending $30 million on research to examine the chemical’s health risks, but the FDA has remained quiet on the subject in recent years—prompting the NRDC lawsuit.
Research done by other institutions indicates that BPA can mimic the hormone estrogen, and thus it is considered to be an endocrine disruptor. Some scientists claim that BPA is not a health threat, but studies have linked the chemical to a greater risk of cancer, heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and behavioral problems in young children.
“EMSL Analytical, Inc. performs testing for BPA and other chemicals in its consumer product division,” states Joseph Frasca, Senior VP of Marketing at EMSL. “Our superior testing services are the result of our decades-long experience in the industry and the expertise of our highly trained staff.”
