Core Talent recruitment agency gives its response to the increasing need for purchasing and supply chain professionals with the statistics from the first half of the year showing an increase according to The Chartered Institute of Purchase and Supply (CIPS) and Hays Recruitment.

The report from CIPS showed the number of procurement officer jobs had increased by 200%, with requirement for senior buyers growing by 110%. Additionally there were 75% more jobs available in procurement management during April to June 2011, reflecting the trend of procurement placements becoming high-level strategic function in an organisation.

The news promises stimulating times for procurement and buyers despite the current economic climate. The recent financial crisis and the continuing uncertainties within the global economy has lead many companies to turn to buyers to cut costs,  review business strategies and  expand parts of their operations that ultimately help them to ensure sustainability of future growth.

Core Talents purchasing and supply chain specialist Damian Diggles said, “A career in purchasing offers big opportunities, big responsibilities and big rewards. At Core Talent we have noticed that although unemployment levels in the UK continue to rise, there is still an increasing requirement for purchasing professionals. There are still exciting roles to be found within the sector, and its future looks promising.”

The procurement profession rarely boasts its own achievements but its impact on businesses can be enormous. The idea of spending another person’s money may sound simple; however a career in purchasing goods and services requires a great amount of knowledge and skill to understand its true value.

Some of the skills required within the sector include:

  • Excellent negotiation and communication skills

You will need to build a good rapport with suppliers and other businesses from different countries and cultures.
  • Research and analytical skills

You will often be required to invest in products and devices you may well not know much about and so researching skills are critical.
  • Sales Skills with a good head for figures

You will need to prove your ability to other members of your department that you know best when it comes to investing in products at the lowest price.

Many organisations now rely on procurement buyers to take the lead in a number of responsibilities outside of their comfort zone including the social interaction of the business as the impact of procurement on the environment and a community’s social and economic prosperity is becoming increasingly important.

Core Talent recruitment currently has an extensive selection of purchasing jobs opportunities on their website as well as advertising current vacancies in logistics jobs, engineering jobs and manufacturing jobs.
