In 1986, California voters approved an initiative to address increasing concerns about exposure to toxic chemicals. That initiative, the Safe Drinking Water and Toxic Enforcement Act of 1986, is better known by its original name of Proposition 65.

Proposition 65 requires businesses to notify Californians about significant amounts of chemicals in the products they purchase, in their homes or workplaces, or that are released into the environment.  This list includes imazalil, a systemic fungicide used for post harvest on some fruits, pre-planting seed treatments and in chicken hatcheries.

Imazalil was first registered in 1983.  It is highly irritating to the eyes and is primarily a concern for workers’ exposed to this fungicide.  For those exposed they may experience oral, dermal or inhalation toxicity.  Workers may be exposed to this chemical while mixing, loading and applying the pesticide or during reentry to treated sites.

“There are a number of trade names for fungicides that contain imazalil,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at LA Testing and EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading environmental and industrial hygiene testing laboratory.  “Because the product is used in the fruit, vegetable and ornamental agricultural industries it is of particular concern to California workers who are involved in the growing of these items. It has been found to have a half life in some soil types of from four to five months so the residual effects of the chemical’s application should be considered to prevent worker exposure.  Testing the air, soil and water can help minimize worker exposure and help identify situations where environmental contamination may be a concern,” he continued.

LA Testing provides services to test for imazalil and other potentially toxic materials.  To learn more about Proposition 65 testing services, please visit www.LATesting.com, email info@LATesting.com or call (800) 755-1794.
