FDA Increases Salmonella Testing for Pet Food and Other Pet Products

EMSL Analytical, Inc. provides quality Salmonella testing services for pet food products

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recently announced that it is expanding its testing of domestic pet products, including pet food, pet treats, and supplements for pets.

The FDA’s Center for Veterinary Medicine “is concerned about animal feeds serving as vehicles for transmitting pathogenic and antibiotic-resistant bacteria to humans and other animals,” affirms a memorandum published by the FDA. The Center has singled out Salmonella bacteria as a particular focus, as the association between salmonellosis and the handling of contaminated pet food and treats is well-documented by the FDA.

In recent years, there have been several human outbreaks of salmonellosis resulting from contact with pet food products. One outbreak, between January 2006 and December 2007, Salmonella Schwarzengrund in dry dog food caused seventy cases of salmonellosis in the United States.

“EMSL Analytical, one of the nation’s largest food testing laboratories, has extensive expertise in testing for Salmonella and other pathogens in pet food products,” states Joseph Frasca, Senior VP of Marketing at EMSL. “We also have a Special Projects team that works with our clients to customize methods, which are tailored to their specific needs.”
