Petition Calls on FDA for Mandatory Labeling of Genetically Modified Foods

EMSL Analytical Inc. provides testing for genetically modified foods

WEBWIRE

On October 4, 2011, a coalition of 300 companies, organizations, and physicians filed a petition with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to demand mandatory labeling of genetically modified food.

Genetically modified foods are products that have been derived from genetically modified organisms (GMOs), and they first appeared on the market in the 1990s. Genetically modified corn, soybean, canola, tomatoes, and cotton seed oils are some of the products available today.

“This petition is an indication of the nation’s heightened concern about food safety during an era of rapid technological advancement and consumers’ increased attention to labels,” remarks Joseph Frasca, Senior VP at EMSL Analytical, Inc.

“EMSL has always been at the forefront of food testing technology, and we offer analysis of GMOs at select locations across the country. Thanks to our expertise and experience, we can also answer consumers’ questions about these products and the science behind them.”
