Colleges and Universities Support ‘We Don’t Serve Teens’ Campaign Targeting Adults

Boston, MA -- Clear Channel Outdoor Boston has donated billboards throughout the City of Boston in support of a campaign to stop underage access to alcohol during the August and September back-to-school period. Mayor Thomas M. Menino announced the City of Boston would increase its support for the “We Don’t Serve Teens” campaign in partnership with Patrón Spirits and the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities in Massachusetts (AICUM). The initiative is sponsored by a coalition of public and private sector organizations, including the Federal Trade Commission (FTC). Boston’s support marks the first time a municipality has utilized the “We Don’t Serve Teens” campaign for a citywide effort.

During the back-to-school period, more than 50 Clear Channel Outdoor billboards in targeted Boston neighborhoods will carry the message that: “The City of Boston reminds you: The legal drinking age is 21. Thank you for not providing alcohol to teens.” The messages will appear in English and Spanish.

“Teens having access to alcohol is an important public safety issue in Boston, one that is magnified with the return of college students,” said Stephen Ross, President, Clear Channel Outdoor Boston Division. "Clear Channel Outdoor is honored to help this message become more impactful and widespread throughout Boston.”

The Patrón Spirits Company, a national supporter of the “We Don’t Serve Teens” program, is funding the cost of materials and advertising for the Boston campaign. Clear Channel Outdoor is helping to fund the billboards, and Horizon Beverage Company is distributing campaign materials to retailers. AICUM, which represents 60 independent, or private, colleges and universities in the Commonwealth, is also rallying its members to communicate the campaign’s message to adult constituents of its organizations.
