Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister to Grace 51st Tibetan Democracy Day

DHARAMSHALA: The Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh, Prof Prem Kumar Dhumal, will be the chief guest at the 51st Tibetan democracy day celebration in Dharamsala on 2 September.

The members of the All Party Indian Parliamentary Forum for Tibet will also join the celebration.

Remembered as the gift of democracy from His Holiness the Dalai Lama, the Tibetans in exile have been celebrating the democracy day since 2 September 1960 - the day on which the first elected representative body in Tibet’s history, the Commission of Tibetan People’s Deputies or the Assembly of Tibetan People’s Deputies - was first instituted.

The highlights of the upcoming democracy day celebration include keynote addresses by chief minister Prof Prem Kumar Dhumal, Kalon Tripa Dr Lobsang Sangay and Speaker of the Tibetan Parliament-in-Exile, Mr Penpa Tsering.

The chief justice commissioner of the Central Tibetan Administration, Mr Ngawang Phelgyal, will launch a book titled “Path of Democracy” published by the Tibetan Parliament. The book is a collection of statements given by His Holiness the Dalai Lama for the Tibetan people to take on the path of democracy, addresses to the Tibetan Parliament, statements made by the Tibetan Parliament and the Kashag on the democracy day till date.

Kalon Tripa Dr Lobsang Sangay will release the Tibetan version of the report “A Synthesis of Recent Science and Tibetan Research on Climate Change”, published by the Environment and Development Desk of the Department of Information and International Relations.

A couple of other publications on Tibetan Buddhism and history will also be released on the occasion.

The chief minister will honour three Tibetan students with Gaden Phodrang Student’s Award for their top performances in their respective fields of studies in the class XII board examinations.

There will be cultural performances by the Tibetan Institutes of Performing Arts and Thangtong Lugar.
