2011 marks company’s fifth consecutive year on list

Minneapolis, Minn – BLACK ENTERPRISE recently named General Mills as one of the 2011 “40 Best Companies for Diversity” in America. The annual list appears in the July issue of BLACK ENTERPRISE magazine and on BlackEnterprise.com. Companies are selected based on their success at fostering an atmosphere of inclusion for African-Americans within their workforce. This year marks General Mills’ fifth consecutive year on the “40 Best Companies for Diversity” list.

“We’re proud to again be recognized by BLACK ENTERPRISE magazine for our ongoing commitment to creating an inclusive workplace,” said Ken Charles, vice president of Diversity and Inclusion at General Mills. “For us, inclusion is both a value and a business strategy that helps us attract and retain top talent while driving innovation and consumer engagement around the world.”

General Mills’ commitment to diversity starts at the top and is reflected in its hiring and professional advancement of women and people of color into leadership positions. Three African-Americans report directly to General Mills’ Chairman and CEO and two African-Americans currently sit on the General Mills Board of Directors.

To select the 2011 “40 Best Companies for Diversity,” BLACK ENTERPRISE sent surveys to America’s top 1,000 publicly traded companies as well as to the 100 leading global companies with strong U.S. operations. The questionnaire focused on the participation of African-Americans and members of other ethnic minority groups as defined by the U.S. Census Bureau in four key areas – supplier diversity, senior management, board involvement, and employee base. The final scores, along with the results of reporting and research conducted by the editorial staff, were used to determine the “40 Best Companies for Diversity.”

The complete report, including methodology and selection criteria, is available in the July issue of BLACK ENTERPRISE magazine.
