LAUSANNE, SWITZERLAND, September 1, 2011 — Singer/songwriter Paul Simon’s song, “50 Ways to Leave a Lover,” is the inspiration behind American Author Carolyn Moncel’s new collection of fiction called “5 Reasons to Leave a Lover — A Novella and Other Short Stories”.

In “5 Reasons to Leave a Lover” principal characters, Ellery and Julien Roulet, from Moncel’s previous work, Encounters in Paris, return in the novella. Their tale picks up where the short story “Pandora’s Box Revisited” ends. This time the Roulets are involved in a love triangle, and along with two other couples in the companion short stories, explore how love relationships splinter beyond repair.

“That song is only half right. The ways in which to leave a lover are infinite, but the reasons are pretty finite,” says Moncel, a Chicago native, who has lived between Paris and Lausanne, Switzerland for the last nine years. “At the end of the day, it usually boils down to cheating, cruelty, deception, ambivalence and death.”

For Moncel, a life-long storyteller, complicated love relationships seem to be her forte. She admits that she enjoys crafting stories around these themes because they never get boring and it’s always fun. “It’s a collection of both bittersweet stories that prove that some breakups are necessary while others are simply destined and beyond anyone’s control.”
