SEDONA, Ariz. June 22, 2011—The Sedona Conference® announced today the publication of a new paper, The Sedona Conference Commentary® On Finding The Hidden ROI In Information Assets. This paper advocates looking at information management from the perspective of finding the “option value” of information assets as one key element of information governance policies and practices.

“The Sedona Conference® is known for providing guidance and commentary on some of the most challenging aspects of today’s legal practice,” stated Richard Braman, Board Chair for The Sedona Conference®. “With this paper, we depart from focusing on the legal profession and look to lend our collective expertise and unique approach to the field of information governance. We believe that The Sedona Conference® can and will continue to advance the dialogue around a growing challenge – how to access and leverage value from an organization’s own data.”

The amount of information existing in the world is growing exponentially. Every day, firms, businesses, governmental organizations and non-profits create massive volumes of information. Creating this information is much easier than effectively governing it and taking advantage of its value beyond the short-term use for which it was created. Its long-term use is often hidden, remaining untapped.

The purpose of this paper is to provide an approach through which an entity can better identify, access, calculate, and leverage the “hidden” value or return on investment (ROI) of the information it creates. The option value approach emphasizes the importance of recognizing the potential future value of an entity’s information, and provides a method whereby that potential future value can be measured to help justify an appropriate level of investment in information governance resources.

The paper is available on the website of The Sedona Conference® at www.thesedonaconference.org for free download for personal use. Please feel free to contact Richard Braman at rgb@sedonaconference.org for further information.
