EMSL Analytical provides environmental and indoor air quality (IAQ) testing solutions for residential and commercial properties impacted by the historic tornado season.

Cinnaminson, NJ

Just last Thursday tornados in three states killed 15 people and left large areas of destruction and damage to homes and businesses. This followed the previous Sunday’s devastating tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri and caused over 100 deaths making it one of the deadliest on record.

This year there have been over 1,100 tornados compared to an average of close to 700 in a typical year at this point. In addition to the tragedies caused by countless fatalities, hundreds of structures have been either completely destroyed or damaged. For the owners of the damaged properties they now face decisions about rebuilding, but many also face potential environmental concerns as well. Many of these homes and businesses have now also suffered water damage that can quickly lead to mold growth. In addition, many older structures likely contain building materials that have asbestos and even lead based paints.

“The process of repairing and rebuilding these structures, if not done properly, could lead to the aersolization of fungal spores, lead and asbestos fibers,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President, Marketing at EMSL Analytical, Inc., a leading environmental testing laboratory. “Also due to moisture getting into wall and ceiling cavities there may be mold growth that is not visible to the naked eye. Fortunately there are quick and affordable ways to test suspect materials and the air quality to help determine if any of these threats are present to protect the people involved with the reconstruction and the future occupants of the properties,” he continued.

Following the historic flooding that have taken place along parts of the Mississippi River, EMSL released a public outreach video on things the public should be aware of to prevent IAQ problems. This video will also be helpful to tornado victims who suffered water damage. The video can be seen at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oPAVegOUkQ0
