WEBWIRE

“This is a horrible tragedy for the Joplin community. We’re deeply concerned by the devastation we’ve seen and our thoughts and prayers are with those who have been injured or lost family members in the tornado.

“Our store near Rangeline Road was significantly damaged. Sadly, we had some injuries and fatalities as the tornado blew through the building. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of those customers in this extremely difficult time.

“At the same time, we offer our appreciation to the store associates at Joplin store #59. They implemented their severe weather safety plan, helping to save hundreds of lives.

Associates:

“Our top priority is the well-being of our associates. We have teams on the ground attempting to contact our associates in Joplin and the surrounding area.

“We were able to account for all associates working at the store at the time the tornado struck. But we want to make sure we have followed up with the rest of the Walmart family in the area.

Community:

“Finally, Walmart is committed to being a community partner in recovery efforts. We are pledging $1 million to help with relief efforts in Joplin to ensure the essential needs of residents are being met. We’re working to direct truckloads of water, food and other basic items to the area to help the community during this difficult time.

“We’ll continue to work closely with the Salvation Army, Red Cross and other agencies to monitor further ways to help.”
