California Hospitals Battle with Infectious Diseases

In 2008, a Gavilan Hills resident helped to spearhead a landmark bill through the California Legislature. The bill, Nile’s Law, is named for her son who was 15 when he died of a hospital acquired infection (HAI). The law requires the state to collect and make public the number of HAIs acquired in California. In December, the first report from 383 general acute care facilities was released on the Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) website.
There are an estimated 200,000 HAIs in California each year resulting in 12,000 deaths annually. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) one out of every twenty hospital patients acquires an infection while being treated for another illness in the U.S.
A 2006 study sponsored by Resources for the Future and reported in the Archives of Internal Medicine reported that hospital acquired infections added $8.1 billion in additional medical costs each year in the country.
