Bit-splitting encryption exceeds PCI compliance for customer data protection

WELLINGTON, – Unisys Corporation (NYSE: UIS) today announced that its New Zealand subsidiary has been selected to provide Unisys Stealth Solution data protection technology to car rental company Hertz New Zealand to help secure and protect Hertz customers’ credit card data against fraud.

The patent-pending Unisys Stealth Solution uses data encryption and bit-splitting technology to secure data. Using the Stealth Solution, organisations can define communities of interest – specific groups of users – and segregate access to data on a shared network or storage system so that one community of interest cannot access another’s data.

Hertz New Zealand is part of one of the largest global car rental companies, with more than 40 physical locations across New Zealand as well as a 24-hour online booking system. Its customers rely on credit cards as a convenient way to pay for vehicle rentals. Because of this, Hertz New Zealand must comply with the worldwide Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS), which is designed to prevent credit card fraud through increased controls around credit card data.

“We take the protection of our customer data seriously both to protect our clients from being vulnerable to credit card fraud, and to preserve their trust in the Hertz brand. We selected the Unisys Stealth Solution because its extra-strength security allows us to exceed the Payment Card Industry requirements to protect credit card data,” said Chris Rusden, Region Vice President and Managing Director, Hertz Australasia.

Unisys Stealth Solution applies multi-level security to both data in motion (including the transfer of data between applications or across the internet) and data at rest (such as data stored on a disk or hard drive). It uses Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) 256-bit encryption in addition to breaking the information apart into multiple slices (“bit–splitting”) before they are transmitted through the network or saved on a disk.

The deal provides Hertz with the ability to use the solution for up to five years. It builds on an existing relationship with Unisys, through which Unisys already provides a range of IT managed services, including hosting a Unisys ClearPath Libra Model 400 server to support a number of Hertz’s mission-critical applications.

Unisys New Zealand Managing Director Brett Hodgson said the contract for the Unisys Stealth Solution is a logical extension of the existing technology and services relationship with Hertz New Zealand. “Data protection must be an integral part of today’s IT strategy. Through all of the services in this engagement, Unisys provides Hertz with a single point of contact for the security of customer payment data and helps protect the client’s mission-critical IT infrastructure,” Mr Hodgson said.
