Peter Scholz, winemaker of the boutique The Willows Vineyard, was named the Barossa Winemaker of the Year on Sunday the 20th of February at the annual Declaration of Vintage ceremony.

The announcement, made by Stephen Henschke, Grand Master of the Barons of Barossa, was greeted by strong approval from the assembled wine community. Stephen noted, “Pete is liked and respected by everyone in the region and is truly one of the ‘great guys’ of the Barossa.”

This honour follows a record-breaking trophy haul at the Barossa Wine Show in September, where he was awarded 6 Trophies including Most Outstanding Wine of the Show for the Willows 2010 Riesling.

In acknowledging an illustrious line-up of former Barossa Winemakers of the Year, including Louisa Rose, Chris Ringland, Wayne Dutschke, Andrew Wigan and Troy Kalleske, Peter said, “I feel humbled to be in such great company and really lucky to be a winemaker in the Barossa.”

Peter served his “apprenticeship” with the great Peter Lehmann, working alongside Andrew Wigan and Charlie Melton. He released the first vintage of The Willows Vineyard in 1987.

Now there are 7 award-winning Willows wines, all sourced from the estate vineyard: Riesling, Semillon, Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, ‘Bonesetter’ Shiraz and The ‘Doctor’ Sparkling Red N.V. (Peter is the first generation to make wine at The Willows, with the previous 5 generations all medical doctors). Go to www.thewillowsvineyard.com.au for more information on The Willows Vineyard.
