DePuy Hip Recall Victims at High Risk for Experiencing Complications from Revision Surgery

(New York, NY, February 10, 2011) Patients grappling with the consequences of DePuy Orthopaedics’ recalled hip replacement devices may have more difficulties on the horizon if they are in need of a revision surgery to correct their initial hip replacement procedure. Many patients who were implanted with either the DePuy ASR XL Acetabular System or the ASR Hip Resurfacing System might face additional surgery if they are experiencing pain when walking, sitting, or standing or inflammation at the hip. These symptoms indicate possible loosening or detachment from the bone. Additionally, severe toxic reactions are possible due to the release of excessive metal debris into the bloodstream from these poorly designed devices. On average, one in eight people who were implanted with these recalled DePuy devices may need to have a revision surgery within five years of the original procedure. Although hip replacements aren’t meant to last forever, their lifespan is supposed to be at least 15 years.
Many hip replacement recipients do undergo a second revision surgery to replace a worn-out hip replacement device, rather than one which is badly designed. In the case of the DePuy devices, a patient undergoing a revision surgery sooner than anticipated will be at risk for experiencing greater complications. Larger portions of bone may have to be removed, and recuperation could take as long as 6 months. Those who have been implanted with one of the two defective DePuy devices are susceptible to experiencing these complications, as well as a longer road to recovery after revision surgery.
