EMSL’s Food Testing Division Now Offers GMO Testing Services

In an effort to further expand their food testing services, EMSL Analytical now offers analysis for genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and genetically modified foods (GMs).

Genetically modified foods were first introduced to the market in the 1990s. These genetically modified foods are food products that have been derived from genetically modified organisms. GMOs have had their DNA altered through genetic engineering for various purposes.

A number of the genetically modified food products that have made it to market include products with genetically modified corn, soybean, canola, tomatoes, cotton seed oils and other ingredients. Before the introduction of genetic engineering man had relied primarily on selective breeding of plants and animals to obtain a desired final product. Advances in science now allow humans to use very precise genetic engineering techniques.

These advances have been met with both praise and concern by scientists, food regulators and the general public. Critics have been vocal about concerns related to GM foods on several fronts. Potential safety issues, ecological concerns, economic concerns and issues related to intellectual property law have all been raised.
