About the 1968 Police Raid

At about noon on October 18, 1968, police raided the London apartment at 34, Montague Square, W1, which was shared by John Lennon and Yoko Ono. The raid was performed by two Detective Sergeants, three Detective Constables, and two drug sniffing dogs along with their handlers. The police found in the apartment two people, Lennon and Ono, according to a MPS report, “both were in a state of undress.” The drug sniffing dogs found cannabis resin in a suitcase and in an empty binocular case. John Lennon and Yoko Ono Cox were arrested and charged with unlawful possession of Cannabis.

Some thought the arrest was heavy handed and was done by the police to generate publicity. The attention given to the case caused House of Commons member Arthur Lewis to inquire about the tactics used during the arrest. The Metropolitan Police Service asserted that it did not tip off the press about raid. The MPS said the size of the raiding party was necessary. In response to the inquiry, the MPS reported that, “it was not unusual to find, when executing such warrants premises occupied by members of the entertainment world to find large numbers of people present taking place in unusual parties.” The files further state the MPS’ account of the details of the raid.
