SINGAPORE, 9 December 2010 – Normally, no one would associate cyberspace, the Internet, and things related to it, with pollution and label them a cause for concern for the environment. For the average man or woman on the street, the computing industry, in its paperless formats and energy-saving designs, has been one of the leaders of the green movement for a long time now. However, behind the scenes of the supposed environmentally-friendly digital landscapes lay the ugly truths - which are that even they contribute to the growing problem of pollution. This is what Vodien Internet Solutions recognises and has renewed their commitment to do their bit for the environment. “This is not something we think about every day, but even an industry like the web hosting industry has a part to play to save the environment. For Vodien, the belief is that more can always be done when it comes to web hosting and the environment. For example, it is a little known fact that a data server, the backbone of the web-hosting industry, has the potential to release just as many emissions as that of a car, and that when housed together in a single data centre, can potentially use enough electricity to power 25000 households and produce around 13 tonnes of CO2 in a single year. These are truly staggering figures when looking at the exponential growth of the Internet and its supporting industries, and how more and more people are demanding for more bandwidth and faster speeds online – which can only mean more room for pollution if things are not looked at.

This is where Vodien is putting its feet down in reducing its carbon foot print. Already they have started the machinery of green web hosting within their walls. They have utilised technology and looked at energy-efficiency grids to reduce their overall usage by more than 20%. “We have also looked at our attitude towards paper usage and materials in our daily work life. We re-use when we can, insist on recycled material and reducing our dependency on paper.” says John Jervis.

This simply adds to the many ‘firsts’ that Vodien has championed thus far. “Going green is something that we drew up on the boardroom table. It was also not just a casual choice that we made.
