Tomorrow voters across California will decide the fate of Proposition 26. If passed, Proposition 26 will make two changes to California’s State Constitution. First it defines various state “fees” as “taxes” and secondly it requires people’s votes instead of an action by a governing body to implement these “taxes.”

Opponents of the proposition have named it the “Pollution Protection Act” since many of the fees in question are related to environmental and health regulations. These current fees paid by corporations help fund many of California’s environmental monitoring and remediation projects across the state. A change in status from “fees” to “taxes” would likely shift more of the financial obligation for environmental issues to the general public.

Groups such as Taxpayers Against Protecting Polluters have been working to have their voices heard before tomorrow’s voting. The outcome of tomorrow’s voting could have enormous fiscal repercussions for California residents.

LA Testing, an affiliate of EMSL Analytical and a leading provider of environmental testing services, has a long history of helping California protect its environment and people from environmental threats.
