Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada – With increasing government, public, and financial pressures to ‘go green’ always on the rise, Canlan Ice Sports, among other venues in the pacific northwest such as Safeco Field, have found hundreds of thousands of dollars in year on year savings from sustainability initiatives.

Canlan Ice Sports has included sustainability as a line item in their mission statement and supported it with a written Energy Policy and Strategic Energy Management Plan. In the three years since they started implementing sustainability measures in the venues they have identified over 7.2 million kWh in savings resulting in over $453,000 annual energy saving costs.

Safeco field and the Seattle Mariners committed to sustainability and invested in a new LED scoreboard. This initiative alone is saving the Mariners 1 Million kWh and $50,000 per year.

Teams are taking notice of the goldmine sustainability is proving to be. Aileen McManamon from 5TSports Group, a sports marketing and venue consulting firm out of Vancouver, has seen the growing recognition of the value in sustainability, “In tough times, teams are eager to find ways to manage and reduce costs. Committing to Sustainability allows teams to do this while still adding value for stakeholders. It’s a big win-win and teams of all sports and sizes are jumping in.” Aileen also points out that she expects new grants and funding opportunities through the government, large banks, and sponsors to start really impacting the ability of smaller venues to make the green shift and reap the rewards sooner.

5T Sports is offering a webinar on sustainability in sports on November 4th to help support teams looking to make incremental gains that increase their sustainability and decrease their costs. They also publish a running blog on the 5 key areas of sports sustainability that can be found here www.5tsports.com/web/news .

Sports teams are eagerly jumping into a leadership role in the adoption of sustainability programs and the community, publicity, social, and financial benefits are still growing.
