Happy Feet: Girls Hoping to Reach America for Life-Changing Operation

WEBWIRE

The ’Happy Feet’ appeal is attempting to raise £100,000 in order to send Holly and Lucy Fox to America for a life-changing operation, which could leave the girls “almost completely free of (their) disability”.

The twins, from Manchester, were delivered by emergency caesarean section 10 weeks prematurely, and weighed just 2lb 2oz and 2lb 12 oz 10. They spent their first 14 days in the Special Care Baby Unit at Manchester’s St Mary’s Hospital, following which they were transferred to Stepping Hill Neo Natal Unit in Stockport.

It was not until 18 months later that the pair were diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy, which occurred as a result of mild brain damage during birth.

The girls suffer from Spastic (CP), which affects their legs. Their muscle tone is too tight meaning they are unable to put both feet flat on the ground, and require leg splints and special shoes in order to walk independently.

But now, a miracle operation in America may be able to help the girls eradicate their disability.

Selective Dorsal Rhizotomy (SDR) has been performed on over 2,000 patients during the last 28 years, and the twins have been told they are “ideal candidates for this operation” by neurosurgeons at St Louis Children’s Hospital.

Holly and Lucy Fox’s parents have therefore set up the ’Happy Feet’ appeal, which aims to raise the £100,000 required to send the pair to America. The appeal has already held several successful events, including a Golf Day, with many more to follow.

“It’s great to see people are already coming out to support the girls” notes Tim Roberts, MD of I-COM, the company responsible for creating the ’Happy Feet’ appeal website: http://www.happy-feet-appeal.info/

“This operation will drastically improve their quality of life, now and in the years to come.”
