Anxious to explore the world, Iris begins her adventure at the Pentagon in the War years, excited by the pulse of the city. But upon meeting a handsome soldier her previous ambitions fade, new plans unfold and they marry.

Tragedy strikes as her husband dies and the younger of her two boys is struck down by polio.

Swallowing her pride, Iris returns to her small town, devoting years to helping her little boy walk again, battling not just illness but discrimination and prejudice. She restores his spirit and instills her sense of adventure.

Through the passage of time Iris realizes the importance of family above all, and when tragedy strikes again in her life, her polio son flies to her aid.
