Residents at the Newfield House Independent Living Scheme in Wakefield are benefiting from affordable, lower-carbon heating and hot water, thanks to advanced metering technology supplied by sustainable energy company ENER-G Switch2.

The company, based in Saltaire, near Bradford, was appointed by Wakefield and District Housing (WDH) to supply and operate a complete utility management service that removes the age-old problem of estimated and inaccurate supplier billings, together with a range of analytical benefits and reports to improve efficiency and cost savings.

Newfield House is a refurbishment of an existing building. It provides one and two-bedroom flats, available to rent from WDH which has responsibility for 31,000 homes in the Wakefield area and is the fifth largest housing organisation in England.

ENER-G Switch2 is supplying similar metering and monitoring services at Monument Mews Independent Living Scheme, also managed by WDH. Additionally, the company has worked on energy-saving projects in Barnsley and Sheffield.

Residents at the two developments will notice an average 30% saving on their energy bills.

The energy efficiency system guarantees the accurate capture of Newfield House’s performance and efficiency measures, with domestic smart meters installed to allow residents to monitor and track their own energy consumption using easy to read ‘dashboard’ displays.

A cutting edge automatic meter reading system (AMR) provides precise daily readings of all the domestic meters to ensure accurate, individual billing. This alleviates the need to access properties which is costly, time consuming and inconvenient for customers. It also gives WDH a comprehensive analysis of billing and overall energy efficiency and cost performance.

The ENER-G group offers an integrated approach to energy management in major residential developments, including consultancy, procurement and smart metering, as well as online energy and utilities data management systems that optimise energy use.

The group also provides a market leading combined heat and power solution that is almost twice as efficient as conventional power generation. CHP electricity is around one third of the price charged by conventional UK suppliers and cuts carbon by around 20%.

Latest official figures show almost four million UK households are living in fuel poverty, a figure that could be dramatically cut by using technology to control and monitor heat use in individual homes.

ENER-G Switch2 works to ensure that some of Britain’s poorest people avoid crippling energy bills. The company is one of the UK’s biggest suppliers of metering and billing technologies and services for multi-tenancy buildings.

ENER-G Switch2 recently celebrated its 30th anniversary in Yorkshire by expanding into new premises, where the company will create up to 20 new jobs in the next 12 months.

The company has doubled its turnover over the past three years to £9 million and is on target to achieve an £11 million turnover this financial year. It relocated within the Bradford area from Cullingworth to Saltaire – taking 6,500 sq ft of office space.

Jayne Clare, managing director of ENER-G Switch2, said the company had already beaten targets set in its five-year growth plan.

ENER-G Switch2 has evolved from a metering and maintenance operation, predominantly for local authority clients operating large district heating schemes, into total energy service provision.

Its services include the design, installation, operation and maintenance of green communal energy schemes for both public and private sector clients. Among its customers are: Berkeley Homes, Hyde Housing Association and Gentoo, as well as numerous local authorities, registered social landlords and public and private sector organisations.
