New Anger Management Assessment Test Released

BETHESDA, MD (October 7, 2010) - How does one tell the difference between normal anger and problem anger? There are some obvious answers to this question, such as physical violence. But, where does one draw the line between healthy expression of frustration and anger that is destructive or pathological?

To answer this question, psychologist and anger management expert Dr. Joe James has developed an automated multiple choice online test that helps people to gauge where their anger lies on a continuum relative to their peers.

“There are several challenges in confronting someone who you think may have an anger management problem” explains Dr. James. “First off, everyone has a different level of sensitivity to anger so what one person may experience as completely out of line may be seen by someone else as a normal expression of frustration.”

Dr. James elaborated “To further complicate matters, many people who do struggle with anger management problems are in denial about having a problem in the first place and may come up with all sorts of rationales for their behavior”.

Just these two factors combined create a multitude of problems “I’ve seen couples actually fighting about whether or not one of them has an anger management problem” said Dr. James.

To deal with this Dr. James has developed an questionnaire which asks test takers 50 questions about concerning the frequency of behaviors typically associated with anger management problems. Test takers receive their test scores immediately upon completion of the test along with a brief description of how their anger behaviors compare with most people.

Dr. James urges both the person who may have an anger management problem and their partner to both take the test to see how their perceptions match.

The test is intended for informational and educational purposes.
“The main purpose of the test is to help people break through any denial they may have about their anger management problems” explained Dr. James.
