Earlier this year, Lanyon Bowdler Solicitors and local charity Headway Shropshire teamed up to create a therapeutic, vibrant and sustainable garden for the 2010 Shrewsbury Flower Show.

The brainchild of Lanyon Bowdler’s Business Development and Marketing Manager Amanda Jones, the garden was designed by RHS silver gilt award winning garden designer Mike Russell, and was intended to be a place of well being, “a sensory allotment garden for everyone, to both grow food to eat or just relax, all within a small space.”

This is not the first time that charity Headway, which supports the victims of head and brain injuries, and local solicitors Lanyon Bowdler have worked together:

"We (Lanyon Bowdler) regularly raise funds for them (Headway), but this project offered something a little different; apart from general involvement, it was a great way for them to raise their profile” explains Amanda Jones.

Whilst the main aim of the project was to provide Headway Shropshire clients with an opportunity to take part in a therapeutic, rehabilitative and fun gardening experience, the garden also managed to win two awards: the Mike Hough Memorial Trophy for the Best Outdoor Garden, together with one of the Shropshire Horticultural Society’s Gold Medals.

After receiving the trophy, Lanyon Bowdler’s managing partner David Battisby said “this has been a tremendous project which has involved so many people. I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of local suppliers and crafts people – many having simply donated their products.

“This is a first for Lanyon Bowdler and we hope to be back next year to defend our trophy.”

The creation of the garden was made possible thanks to the hard work of Headway Shropshire’s clients, Lanyon Bowdler’s staff and the support of local businesses including B&Q, The Heritage Stone Company, based in Harmer Hill, Huw Morris from Lusty Garden Furniture, stained glass artist Frans Wesselman and metalwork designer Jack Taylor.

Lanyon Bowdler is Shropshire’s largest law firm with 16 partners and approximately 200 experienced staff. With a progressive outlook and a commitment to the environment, the firm embraces opportunities to work with the community – supporting charities and enterprising initiatives.
