Mold Concerns from a Broken Pipe Turn into Asbestos Removal Efforts

WEBWIRE

EMSL Analytical provides asbestos, mold, bacteria and chemical testing solutions to keep building occupants and workers safe.

Cinnaminson, NJ

Earlier this month a pipe broke in a junior high school in Missouri. Classes were scheduled to begin shortly after parts of the school were flooded. As the affected areas were being dried to prevent mold growth the floor tiles began to peel. It was then discovered that the glue that had been used to hold down the tiles contained asbestos.

A broken pipe in a school not only created water damage, but also potential mold growth and exposure to asbestos containing materials. Fortunately the asbestos was discovered and the material is being removed as the children start the school year in another building.

If the pipe in question happened to be a sewage pipe then the school would also have to deal with possible bacteria, viruses and chemical contaminants. All of the contaminants mentioned could cause indoor air quality (IAQ) problems and pose a risk for any soiled surfaces that might be touched by students or faculty.

EMSL Laboratories has been helping schools and property owners test suspect materials after disasters and during remodeling and demolition activities for close to three decades. The company has over 30 locations across the United States and Canada to quickly fulfill client testing and sampling needs.

“Flooding from manmade or natural events can lead to all types of environmental issues and indoor air quality concerns,” reported Joe Frasca, Senior Vice President at EMSL Analytical. “The school in Missouri shows how a basic broken pipe can quickly turn into an environmental hazard if not quickly and properly addressed. At EMSL we have all of the analytical resources needed to test materials and the IAQ to ensure a safe environment for building occupants,” he continued.
