Seven Counties in Northern Illinois Declared Federal Disaster Areas

The ruling opens the path for area residents to receive federal aid to begin rebuilding mold damaged properties.

Last week President Obama declared that flood victims in Carroll, Cook, DuPage, Jo Daviess, Ogle, Stephenson and Winnebago counties are now eligible to apply for federal disaster assistance. The declaration allows properties that were damaged by the torrential rainfall that occurred on July 22nd through the 24th to access money to rebuild and repair.

According to a news release from Illinois Governor, Pat Quinn, “The federal disaster declaration makes assistance available to flood victims, including grants to individuals and households to help with temporary housing, home repairs or replacement and other disaster-related expenses, as well as low-interest Small Business Association (SBA) loans to residents and businesses.”

Many property owners have not been able to reside in their damaged properties due to health concerns from the flooding. Damaged buildings not only have to deal with water issues, but also environmental concerns ranging from mold growth to sewage and chemical contamination from the flood waters. To ensure a safe environment many of these flooded properties will need environmental testing and mold remediation services to return them to livable conditions.

Mold begins to grow in as short as 24 hours so many of these buildings now have extensive microbial problems that cause indoor air quality (IAQ) problems for the building inhabitants. The Illinois building and environmental consulting experts at EC2 have been swamped the last several weeks answering calls and providing testing solutions for IAQ contaminants.

EC2 provides complete testing solutions for property owners and tenants to determine if their properties are safe to inhabit. “The reports of FEMA assistance for area residents and businesses is great news for Illinois,” stated Ed Chambers, the President of EC2. “It’s important that these properties are tested and properly remediated so they don’t become environmental hazards that make people sick in the future.”
